This whole blog writing endeavor is actually pretty fun. I have nobody to answer to except myself. There is no pressure, no expectations other than what I set for myself. I have written the past few lines mainly as a selfish moral justification because I think I am about to use hashtags the wrong way…
Whenever I start using a new application I really enjoy diving in and exploring the settings section. It helps to see how the app is put together, how it is intended to be used and usually means tweaking many of the settings to meet my needs or preferences. When this WordPress installation was complete the first area that I visited was the settings. Once there it turns out that there are two ways to categorize posts, by selecting a category and by assigning tags. So naturally I am going to use hashtags on the….. nope, they will go on the categories.
Now to be honest, when I started writing this post I had every intention of using hashtags on the tags themselves. But this is an instance that as the writing began I got sidetracked, looked into how the categories and tags actually worked, and then had a better idea. Let me explain why I am writing this. This isn’t some rambling post just to build the post count on the blog. I want to hold myself accountable and to see how my view change over time. Therefore – I am documenting the ideas, thoughts, and other random stuff so that it can be reviewed later. In this case I am documenting an idea change in the middle of the post development and I am curious to see how it plays out over time.
One of my goals for this blog is to share stories and experiences in different areas. One of those areas will focus on new Engineers and ways that they can be successful. With this intent in mind, I would like an easy way to identify these posts and had originally planned on using the tag system. But while writing this post, I was double checking on how these things worked and realized that post categories show up on the right hand navigation for the site and would therefore make it very easy to search for each category and therefore I changed the approach. Note for new Engineers – don’t be afraid of change and of getting things wrong. That is one of the best ways to grow and get experience. Note for me – good topic for a blog post.
The final reason for this post is to set a goal. The goal here is to write a post defining each category as it is created and why it is being created. This will hopefully help to keep the focus on the important parts of the blog and message. Now that this post is complete I can finally lift my own embargo on actual content posts due to lack of categories!
