While reviewing Post Ideas this morning I realized that many of them didn’t fit in with the general categories that currently exist on the site. Many posts are geared towards advice for new engineers (#engineeradvice) or Engineering Managers (#engineeringmgmt) but as I was working on a post around table stakes I realized that a big part of Engineering is around making things and managing the projects that result in these things being made. Therefore, under this umbrella some new categories are needed.
Welcome to #productdesign. This category blends the artistic with the science, the creative with the analytical. Here any and all topics will be considered, from Product Engineering: “the process of designing and developing a device, assembly, or system such that it be produced as an item for sale through some production manufacturing process” (from wikipedia, WPC Score: 19) to Product Design: “Product Design is commonly defined as the holistic approach of building a new product from start to finish” (from What is Product Design).
This will capture anything and everything that is posted around making stuff. Looking through the current list of Post Ideas (currently at 183) there are ideas around Re-Engineering products and workflows like boarding an airplane and the recently announced Cybertruck. There are ideas around Product concepts like table stakes, movie GUI interfaces, and designing for manufacturing. The possibilities are endless!
This post is also introducing #projectmanagement. One of the hardest challenges for any Engineering team is defining, maintaining, and continually improving the everyday working processes that guide and structe workflow and output. There is much to discuss here with plenty of buzz-wordy topics like Agile Methodologies, Spotify Models, and Sprint planning. Here topics like waterfall vs agile vs chaos coding can be explored.
As is my custom, introducing new topics comes with a post explaining why these topics are now part of the blog. I like to do this to keep the focus on the specific topics and categories that are interesting to me to explore and to help ensure that I don’t end up writing about the latest pop culture trends and current political mess. This is a best practice approach to creating a blog – pick a general area and build your messaging around that area. In my case, this is Engineering. As much as I would like to go on a tangent and expound on the latest baby yoda rumors…
That would not be a good idea to get lost down that rabbit hole. Now that I have successfully found a way to insert this cute little force-bundle into my blog, it is time to get back to the topics at hand. I hope that the new topics of #productdesign and #projectmanagement provide many interesting new posts and information for your reading enjoyment. Thanks for reading!
